City Chong Penang Laksa (聪槟城叻沙) & Thai Style Toufu @ City Plaza (Singapore)

Penang Laksa - either you like it or you hate it.

I belong to the latter although i have never tried it in Penang despite three visits. To me, penang laksa lacks the robust flavour that forms the character for Singapore style laksa and is usually too sourish and spicy for my liking.

Thankfully, i already had my dinner when Kon suggested this particular stall at City Plaza selling penang laksa and would not have to stomach the whole bowl of sour broth!

Once again, i wasn't too impressed even though in this case, it's not a matter of sourness. Contrary to that, it was not sour enough (sigh, how picky humans can be) to form the correct penang laksa image.

The best penang laksa that i can still somewhat agree to be not bad came from princess terrace cafe; sour to the max with a spiciness to kill yet there was still an undescribable appeal to the rich broth. Important issues that need to be addressed for this bowl of penang laksa.

It's an entirely different story for the thai style tofu offered by the same stall! Detractors may wonder "what's so good when tofu is basically very light flavoured and the sweet-sour That chilli sauce used for the dish is easily purchased from supermarkets?"

The key is actually the deep-fried crispy stuff dumped on the tofu; a crunchy twist to an otherwise pretty common dish. Don't ask me what the stuff is made of.

All i remember is that i almost licked the plate dry.
